How you pay

Claude Code is included in Claude's paid plans: Pro at $20/month ($17 billed annually), Max from $100/month, and Team seats. It can also run on an API account billed per token — Sonnet 5 lists at $2 in and $10 out per million tokens. The free Claude plan does not include it.

Cursor's Hobby plan is free; Pro is $20/month, Pro+ $60 and Ultra $200, with Teams at $40 per user. Each plan includes a set amount of model usage, with usage beyond it billed in arrears.

The instruction files each one loads

Claude Code loads CLAUDE.md files from your project and its parent folders at the start of every session, plus a user-level file in ~/.claude and optional rules in .claude/rules/. Anthropic's docs recommend keeping each file under about 200 lines, because longer files use more context and reduce adherence. Recent versions also read AGENTS.md when no CLAUDE.md is present.

Cursor reads project rules from .cursor/rules/, user and team rules from settings, and AGENTS.md in the project root and subfolders.

If you use both, keep shared rules in AGENTS.md and import it from CLAUDE.md with @AGENTS.md, so the two tools never drift apart.

Which to choose

Pick Claude Code if you work in the terminal and want an agent that plans and runs multi-step changes. Pick Cursor if you want AI inside an editor with inline edits and a visual diff. Many developers run both, which is where a single shared instruction file pays off.

FAQ

Which is cheaper for a solo developer?
Both start at $20/month for their Pro tiers. Heavier use moves you to Claude Max (from $100) or Cursor Pro+ ($60) or Ultra ($200); check which one matches how many hours of agent work you actually run.
Can they share one instruction file?
Yes. Cursor reads AGENTS.md directly. Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, so put shared rules in AGENTS.md and add @AGENTS.md at the top of CLAUDE.md to import them, with any Claude-only notes below it.
How does tokencheat help with either?
It scores the instruction files both tools load on every request and shows which lines cost context without changing behavior. It does not read session logs or usage data.
