Comparison
Gitingest vs Repomix for repository context packing
Gitingest and Repomix both turn a repository into a single text file you can paste into an LLM. Gitingest is a Python tool with a web app; Repomix is a Node CLI with a web app and more output and compression options. Both are free and MIT-licensed.

How you run each
Gitingest runs in the browser at gitingest.com — replace 'hub' with 'ingest' in any GitHub URL — or locally with pipx install gitingest, as a Python package, or via browser extensions. It can also be self-hosted.
Repomix runs with npx repomix@latest (or npm, Homebrew or Docker), has a web app at repomix.com, and can pack a remote GitHub repo with --remote.
Output and token counting
Gitingest writes a plain-text digest: a summary, a directory tree and the file contents, with a token estimate from tiktoken's o200k_base encoding.
Repomix writes XML by default, or Markdown, JSON or plain text, and reports per-file and total token counts (o200k_base by default, configurable). Its --compress option uses Tree-sitter to keep structure while cutting tokens.
Which to choose
For a quick one-off digest of a public repo, Gitingest's URL trick is the fastest path. For repeatable packing in scripts or CI, finer control over what goes in, or a smaller output, Repomix has more options. Either way, the packed file is paid for on every request that includes it — tokencheat's calculators price it per model.
FAQ
- When should I use Gitingest vs Repomix?
- Gitingest for a fast, shareable digest without installing anything. Repomix for local or CI use, custom output formats, compression and fine-grained include/exclude rules.
- Which produces a smaller token footprint?
- Repomix, when configured: filtering and --compress can shrink output substantially. Gitingest optimizes for convenience. Paste either output into tokencheat's token counter to compare.
- Which is better for large repos?
- Repomix handles large repos well because it runs locally and supports filtering and compression; a web digest of a very large repo can be slow.
- Do either reduce token waste over time?
- No — both are one-shot packers. tokencheat audits the instruction files an agent loads on every turn, which is where recurring waste accumulates.
